So Olivia or Lavina James, wife of Josiah (1828-1882), seems to have may questions surrounding her too. The general consensus seems to be that she is the daughter of Daniel James and Ruth Nichols/Nicholas. But, I haven't seen any documents verifying this. Where did the idea that Josiah and Olivia are cousins come from?
James is a pretty common last name. Even in sparsely populated Scioto County, Ohio, there seems to be other James families around. Do we have documents that show Olivia and Josiah are related?
Also, the Scioto County marriage record shows an Olivia James married an Isaiah James in 1848. It's the marriage index that says Olivia married Josiah James. Can we be sure there are the same people?
I'm really interested in pooling what we have on them here. Also, I was planning a trip to Scioto County this summer to dig up everything about their lives there. But, if someone else out there has already gone and can share what they found, then I can change my trip to Harrison County, Missouri, to research their lives there.

Jacklyn sent me the Olivia's Civil War Pension file. One of the depositions was from Elizabeth Biggs, nee James, the daughter of Daniel McPherson James. She was a witness to Olivia's marriage in Scioto, Ohio. That might be a hint that Elizabeth was her sister, but there is no statement in the deposition to that effect. She was definitely Josiah's cousin.
I have never seen any evidence that Olivia & Josiah were cousins. Isaiah and Josiah were the same person. The name was just mangled.

Cathy, may I have a copy of that pension file, please?
I believe you. It seems likely that Josiah and Olivia were related, but you wrote above that she is *definitely* Josiah's cousin even though you've never seen evidence. So I wonder what makes you so sure?
Ok, running off to invite more people to this forum.

Elizabeth Biggs is definitely Josiah's cousin. She is the daughter of Daniel James. Like you said there are several James families in the area surrounding Scioto. Do they all originate from the same family or is it just a common name?
I'll see if I can get my copy of the pension scanned or xeroxed.

For those who haven't seen Olivia before, here are some pictures of her. I think it's pretty cool we know what she looked like. s

Cathy I think the Biggs name is actually Boggs, I'll have to find my emails from Ruby but pretty sure
